What's New in DS Server 5.0
DS Server 5.0 opens the server to plugins that work with its own document processing engine and with live Document Editor sessions, moves to .NET 10 and updates the engine to TX Text Control 34.0. The sections below list what changed in 5.0 and in its updates 5.0.1 and 5.0.2, area by area, with a link to the page that describes each change.
DS Server 5.0 is the current major version, and 5.0.2 is its latest release. Read the Upgrading section before you replace an installation of version 4.x.
Releases
| Release | Date | Based on | .NET |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.0.0 | March 12, 2026 | TX Text Control 34.0 SP3 | .NET 10 |
| 5.0.1 | June 12, 2026 | .NET 10 | |
| 5.0.2 | July 2, 2026 | .NET 10 |
The date of 5.0.0 is that of its release announcement, the date of 5.0.1 that of the change log, and the date of 5.0.2 that of the download package; the change log dates 5.0.2 June 26, 2026. The two updates contain bug fixes only.
DS Server
- Built with .NET 10. Both builds of the archive, Core and Classic, target .NET 10 and need the ASP.NET Core Runtime 10.0. Classic also needs the .NET Desktop Runtime 10.0, and the .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 for its Document Editor worker process, which is still built for .NET 8.
- TX Text Control 34.0 SP3. The document processing engine behind the Web API, the Document Editor and the Document Viewer is updated to TX Text Control 34.0 SP3.
- Fixed in 5.0.1: DS Server could crash when a Document Editor session reconnected.
- Fixed in 5.0.2: a rare crash while DS Server cleaned up a Document Editor worker process.
Plugins
- Services for plugins. A plugin can have two DS Server services injected through ASP.NET Core dependency injection, into its controllers, middleware or services. Plugin Services shows how to use them.
IDocumentProcessingServicegives a plugin the document processing of DS Server without a call to the Web API: converting documents, mail merge, appending, find and replace, thumbnails, document information, PDF form fields and barcodes.IDocumentEditorSessionServicegives a plugin access to the open Document Editor sessions, for example to load a document into a session, change its formatting or read its form fields and merge fields.- Protected signing endpoints. When a plugin provides the signing endpoint of the Document Viewer, the Document Viewer adds the current OAuth access token to the request, so the endpoint can use the access token validation built into DS Server. See Custom Signing Endpoints.
The interfaces for plugins are in the NuGet package TXTextControl.DocumentServices.Plugin.Abstractions, described in the .NET API reference.
Document Editor
- Descriptive texts. Frames, tables, hyperlinks and document links can be given a descriptive text, the text that assistive technologies such as screen readers read out.
- Merge blocks. Inserting a merge block from the ribbon now inserts a table without formatting.
- Status bar. The status bar shows whether the editor is in insert or overtype mode.
- Initial merge field text. The JavaScript API can set the initial text of certain merge fields when the editor is initialized.
- Missing backend message. The change log announces a message in the browser console when the TCP server of the Document Editor is not running. The editor script of DS Server 5.0.2 doesn't contain it.
- Localized units. The measurement units in the ribbon are localized.
- Fixes. Drag and drop in RTF documents, the 64-bit dotnet.exe path on Windows, cut-off words in the spell check dialog, the vertical scrollbar that didn't move to the current misspelled word, footnotes in the text parts collection of the JavaScript API and the parameter check of
TableRow.setMinimumHeight. - Fixed in 5.0.1: TXSpell.dll was missing from the core folder of the archive.
Document Viewer
- Signing through a plugin. The access token forwarding for plugin signing endpoints is described under Plugins.
- Fixes. Signatures are included in the exported document, and signing no longer fails because of wrong or missing references. A signature field with an image shows the image at the size of the field, not at the image's original size. The comment of a pen annotation is loaded by
TXDocumentViewer.annotations.load, and text copied from the Document Viewer into the Document Editor no longer gets a gray background.
Upgrading
- Install the .NET 10 runtimes. DS Server 5.0 no longer runs on the .NET 8 runtimes alone that version 4.x used. Install the runtimes that the Requirements list; on Classic, keep the .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 installed. Use a .NET 10 base image when you build your own container image.
- Update the client packages. Use the version 5.0 releases of the NuGet and npm client packages with DS Server 5.0.
- Plugin package. A plugin that uses the new services needs a 5.0 release of
TXTextControl.DocumentServices.Plugin.Abstractions; the 4.1.0 package doesn't contain them.
Upgrading takes you through replacing an installation step by step.
