TX Spell .NET for Windows Forms

What's New in TX Spell .NET for Windows Forms 5.0

Topic

Language detection arrived in TX Spell .NET for Windows Forms 5.0. For a text that carries no language, the spell checker finds out which languages it is written in and where each one begins and ends, so that the matching dictionaries and hyphenation lists can be used for every part of it.

Version 5.0 was released on September 10, 2014, together with TX Text Control X11 (version 21.0), as the blog article TX Text Control X11 Released: Cross-browser Template Editing announced. The features below are the ones added since Version 4.0; Version 6.0 followed in April 2015.

Language Detection

TX Text Control X10 had introduced a language for each piece of text, and TX Spell .NET 4.0 used it to choose dictionaries and hyphenation lists. Text from a source that stores no language had none to offer. Version 5.0 fills that gap:

  • Language scopes. DetectLanguageScopes splits a string or a whole document into language scopes, sections of one language each, and puts them into a LanguageScopeCollection. A LanguageScope has a Language, a Start and a Length.
  • More than 30 languages. The detection doesn't need the dictionaries of these languages.
  • Short samples. One sentence of four or more words is usually enough to detect its language.
  • Nested and bidirectional text. A phrase in brackets can form a scope of its own, and text that mixes right-to-left and left-to-right languages is split as well.
  • Chosen languages. DetectableLanguageScopes limits the detection to the languages you expect. In Visual Studio, a collection editor in the Properties window edits the list.
  • Both classes. The TXSpellChecker component and the TXSpell class have the same three members.

The sneak peek article Sneak Peek TX Spell 5.0: Language Detection Engine adds that the engine is based on the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm and that it took less than 500 milliseconds for a document of 100 pages in five languages on an average PC of the time. The article TX Text Control X11 Sneak Peek: Language Detection lists the detectable languages and shows the members in use.

Language Detection describes the feature as it works today, in TX Text Control and in code, with the list of detectable languages and the default setting of DetectableLanguageScopes.
