TX Text Control .NET Server

ASP.NET on .NET Framework

Topic

Besides ASP.NET Core, TX Text Control .NET Server 34.0 still supports two older platforms: ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET Web Forms on the .NET Framework. Developers who maintain such an application find here how the Document Editor, the Document Viewer, ServerTextControl and MailMerge are added to it, which files it references and how it is licensed.

For existing applications. On the .NET Framework, TX Text Control runs on Windows only and with the Classic engine, and the files come from the Windows setup instead of the NuGet SDK packages. Start new applications with ASP.NET Core, as described in ASP.NET Core and Getting Started, and move existing ones with From ASP.NET MVC on the .NET Framework to ASP.NET Core.

How It Differs From ASP.NET Core

ASP.NET CoreASP.NET MVC and Web Forms on the .NET Framework
Operating systemsWindows and LinuxWindows only
EngineCore or ClassicClassic
TX Text Control assembliesNuGet packages TXTextControl.TextControl.Core.SDK or TXTextControl.TextControl.ASP.SDKReferences to the Assembly and Assembly\bin64 (or Assembly\bin) folders of the installation
LicenseIncluded in the NuGet packagelicenses.licx with the full version of the assembly
Document Editor backendBackend process started by the application (TXTextControl.Web.DocumentEditor.Backend)TX TextControl Service, a Windows service
Web packagesTXTextControl.Web, TXTextControl.Web.DocumentViewerThe same packages, which contain .NET Framework 4.5 builds for ASP.NET MVC 5; the Web Forms editor comes from TXTextControl.Web.dll of the setup

The HTML helpers of the MVC Document Editor and Document Viewer and the JavaScript APIs of both components are the same as in ASP.NET Core, so the pages of the Document Editor and Document Viewer sections apply to the browser side.

What the Setup Installs

The Windows setup of TX Text Control .NET Server, trial or full version, is required for development on the .NET Framework. It installs:

  • The assemblies in C:\Program Files\Text Control GmbH\TX Text Control 34.0.NET Server for ASP.NET\Assembly, with the native 32-bit files in the bin subfolder and the 64-bit files in bin64.
  • The tools in the Tools folder, among them txregwebsvr.exe, which registers the TX TextControl Service on a server.
  • The package source Text Control Offline Packages with the web packages. See Offline Packages.
  • Sample projects below %USERPROFILE%\Documents\TX Text Control 34.0.NET Server for ASP.NET\Samples\ASP.NET\: CSharp\ASP.NET MVC for MVC and CSharp\ASP.NET Web Forms for Web Forms. The Help Center in the Start menu (TX Text Control 34.0.NET Server for ASP.NET > Help Center) opens them under Getting Started > Sample Projects. The tutorials of this section name the sample folders that Text Control's tutorial documentation gives for them.

Requirements

Applications on the .NET Framework have requirements of their own: .NET Framework 4.0 to 4.8, Windows for development, Visual Studio 2017 to 2022 and, for the Document Editor, IIS 8.0 or IIS Express 8.0 or higher with the WebSocket protocol. The tutorials use .NET Framework 4.8 and Visual Studio 2022. The details are in .NET Framework for Classic ASP.NET Applications, Development Machine for Windows and the system components, and Visual Studio 2026 and Visual Studio 2022 for Visual Studio and IIS. Browser Requirements lists the supported browsers.
