Visual C++ Runtime Dependencies
One dependency of TX Text Control .NET for WPF is neither in the NuGet package nor in the folders of the setup: the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, which the native libraries of the document engine use. A WPF application that has all files of TX Text Control can still fail on a machine without it, so the runtime belongs in your installer or in the preparation of the target machines.
The Runtime at a Glance
| File the native libraries use | VCRUNTIME140.DLL |
| Package to install it with | Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2017 |
| Bitness | That of your application: the 32-bit package for x86, the 64-bit package for x64 |
| Applies to | .NET and .NET Framework applications alike |
The .NET assemblies of TX Text Control don't need the runtime; the native libraries do. It makes no difference whether they come from the runtimes folders of the NuGet package or from Assembly\bin and Assembly\bin64 of the setup.
With AnyCPU, the bitness follows the Windows the application runs on: 64-bit on 64-bit Windows, 32-bit on 32-bit Windows. The machine then needs the runtime of that bitness. See x86, x64, and AnyCPU.
Include the Runtime in Your Deployment
Microsoft distributes VCRUNTIME140.DLL in its redistributable package; use the package instead of copying the file.
- Get the redistributable in the bitness of your application from Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads on Microsoft Learn.
- Include it in the installer of your application, or install it on the target machines in advance.
- If you ship your application in an x86 and an x64 version, pair each version with the redistributable of its bitness.
Warning
Missing Runtime. Without the runtime, the application fails on the target machine although the files of TX Text Control are complete. The steps to fix it are in The Visual C++ Runtime Is Missing.
The XML Parser
A second Windows component is needed only for the XML features of TX Text Control: the Microsoft XML parser, with the files MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL and MSXML3R.DLL in the Windows system directory. To redistribute these files, follow Microsoft's redistribution policy. The supported Windows versions are listed on Windows Versions.
