---

TX Spell .NET for Windows Forms works in two kinds of projects: projects for .NET 8 or higher, which get TX Spell .NET from NuGet packages, and projects for the .NET Framework, which reference the assemblies the setup installs. The API is the same in both. What differs is how the files, the license and the language data reach your project, and the right choice depends on the framework your application targets.

### Supported Versions

| Framework | Versions | TX Spell .NET comes from |
|---|---|---|
| .NET | .NET 8 and .NET 9; version 11.0 was prepared for .NET 10 | The NuGet package `TXTextControl.TXSpell.WinForms.SDK`, which targets .NET 8 and installs in projects for .NET 8 or higher |
| .NET Framework | 4.0, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 | The assemblies *TXSpell.dll* and *TXSpell.Windows.Forms.dll* in the *Assembly* folder of the installation |

Projects for .NET 5, .NET 6 and .NET 7 used the package of version 10.0. The packages of version 11.0 need .NET 8 or higher, so move such a project to .NET 8 or higher before you update; [Breaking Changes](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/whats-new/breaking-changes/llms-full.txt) lists this change.

Microsoft supports each .NET version for a limited time. The [.NET support policy](https://dotnet.microsoft.com/platform/support/policy/dotnet-core) shows which versions receive updates.

### .NET 8 or Higher

In a project for .NET 8 or higher, you install the package from the package source **Text Control Offline Packages**, which the setup provides. The package brings everything the project needs:

- **The assemblies** for .NET 8, with German resources.
- **The license**, as a license file that the build embeds into your assembly: *txspell.winforms.license*.
- **The US English language data**: the dictionary, the hyphenation list, the thesaurus and the language recognition data, which the build copies into the output folder.

[Create Your First Windows Forms Application](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/getting-started/tx-text-control/first-application/llms-full.txt) walks through such a project, and [Package Overview](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/installation/nuget/packages/llms-full.txt) lists the contents of each package.

For code without a user interface, such as a service or a console application, the package `TXTextControl.TXSpell.Core.SDK` contains only the spell checking engine, the [TXSpell](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/reference/txtextcontrol-proofing/txspell/llms-full.txt) class. It runs on Windows and on Linux; [Checking Text in Code](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/getting-started/in-code/llms-full.txt) shows it.

### .NET Framework

In a project for the .NET Framework, you reference the assemblies *TXSpell.dll* and *TXSpell.Windows.Forms.dll* from the *Assembly* folder of the TX Spell .NET installation. The language data is found in the same folder while you develop, and you ship it with the application. The license reaches the application through the project's *licenses.licx* file. [Create a .NET Framework Application](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/getting-started/tx-text-control/dotnet-framework/llms-full.txt) shows the steps, and [Development Licenses](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/installation/licensing/development/llms-full.txt) the license entries.

Since version 7.0, TX Spell .NET for Windows Forms requires the .NET Framework 4.0 or higher.

### Which One to Choose

- **New applications** use .NET 8 or higher, with the NuGet packages.
- **Existing .NET Framework applications** keep the assemblies of the setup. [Migrating from .NET Framework to .NET](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-spell-dotnet-winforms/installation/upgrading/from-dotnet-framework/llms-full.txt) describes the move when you are ready.
- **Services and batch jobs** that only check text use `TXTextControl.TXSpell.Core.SDK` on .NET 8 or higher.
