Azure App Service is the Azure platform for which Text Control publishes a deployment tutorial: the same ASP.NET Core application with the Document Editor runs on App Service on Windows and on Linux, published from Visual Studio or with the Azure CLI. Both variants use the Core engine and bring the native libraries, the fonts and the Document Editor backend with the published application.

### Windows or Linux

| | App Service on Windows | App Service on Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Target runtime | `win-x64` | `linux-x64` |
| Settings before the first deployment | **Platform** set to **64 Bit** and **Web sockets** switched on | None |
| Plan | Basic or higher, required for 64 bit | Basic or higher; the Free tier allows five WebSocket connections |
| Engine | Core; the sandbox blocks the Windows graphics functions that Classic uses | Core; Classic doesn't run on Linux |
| Container images | Windows containers, in the Premium and Isolated tiers | Linux containers; the .NET images listen on port 8080 |

### Scaling and Licensing

App Service adds instances when you scale out, manually or automatically. Keep session affinity on, so that each editing session stays on its instance; [Scaling Containers](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-server/deployment/docker/scaling/llms-full.txt) explains which requests need it. Each instance added by scaling needs its own runtime license; when the number of instances changes automatically, consider the unlimited runtime license. See [Runtime Licenses](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-server/installation/licensing/runtime/#cloud-and-container-deployments) and [OEM / Unlimited Runtime](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-server/installation/licensing/oem/llms-full.txt).
