Adding TX Text Control to a .NET 8 or higher Windows Forms project takes one NuGet package, `TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK`, installed from Visual Studio or the .NET CLI. The same tools update it when a service pack is released. Both are described below, with what the package changes in your project.

### Before You Start

- A Windows Forms project for .NET 8 or higher, created with the **Windows Forms App** template. .NET Framework projects use the assemblies of the setup instead. See [.NET and .NET Framework](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/requirements/dotnet/llms-full.txt).
- A package source that has the package: **Text Control Offline Packages** on a development machine with the setup, or the Text Control Private NuGet Feed. See [Configuring Package Sources](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/nuget/sources/llms-full.txt).

### Install the Package in Visual Studio

1. Select the project in **Solution Explorer**.
2. Choose **Project** > **Manage NuGet Packages...**.
3. Select **Text Control Offline Packages** in the **Package source** list, or **TextControl** for the private feed, and click **Browse**.
4. Select `TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK` and click **Install**.

    ![The NuGet Package Manager of Visual Studio with Text Control Offline Packages as the package source and TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK selected, here in version 31.0.500.](https://docs.textcontrol.com/assets/img/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/nuget-offline-packages.f74b9c03.webp)

    The screenshot comes from version 31.0. For version 34.0, the list shows the version 34.0.5, and the package details name .NET 8 as the target framework.
5. Open a form in the designer. The toolbox now has the tab **TX Text Control 34.0**.

### Install the Package With the .NET CLI

With the package source in the *nuget.config* of the project, run in the project folder:

```bash
dotnet add package TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK
```

To list the packages the private feed offers you, search it by the name of its source:

```bash
dotnet package search "TXTextControl" --source TextControl
```

### What Changes in the Project

- **A package reference.** The project file references the package with the version you installed:

    ```xml
    <PackageReference Include="TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK" Version="34.0.5" />
    ```
- **The license.** The package adds its license file *txtextcontrol.winforms.license*, which is embedded into your assembly when you build. The project needs no *licenses.licx* file. See [Development Licenses](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/licensing/development/llms-full.txt).
- **The toolbox items** of the package appear in the toolbox for this project. See [Visual Studio Toolbox and Designer](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/toolbox/llms-full.txt).

### Update to a New Service Pack

A service pack brings a new version of the package, such as 34.0.5 for Service Pack 5. Your project keeps the version it references until you update it.

1. Install the latest full setup. It updates the existing installation and adds the new package version to **Text Control Offline Packages**. The private feed offers the new version as soon as the service pack is released.
2. In Visual Studio, choose **Project** > **Manage NuGet Packages...**, select the package source and open the **Updates** tab.
3. Select `TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK`, choose the new version and click **Update**.
4. Rebuild the project.

With the .NET CLI, the same command with the version updates the reference:

```bash
dotnet add package TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK --version 34.0.5
```

`dotnet list package --outdated` lists the packages that have a newer version.

To check the service pack an application uses at run time, [TextControl.GetVersionInfo](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/reference/txtextcontrol/textcontrol/getversioninfo-method/llms-full.txt) returns a [VersionInfo](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/reference/txtextcontrol/versioninfo/llms-full.txt) object with a [ServicePack](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/reference/txtextcontrol/versioninfo/servicepack-property/llms-full.txt) property, as [Check the Installed Service Pack](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/whats-new/service-packs/#check-the-installed-service-pack) shows.

A new major version has its own package versions and is covered in [Upgrading from Previous Versions](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/upgrading/previous-versions/llms-full.txt).
