A new major version of TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms, such as 34.0, is installed next to earlier versions and has its own assemblies, its own NuGet package versions and its own toolbox tab. Moving an existing project to it takes a few steps that differ for .NET Framework projects and for .NET projects. Both are described below, after what you need before you start.

### Service Pack or New Version

- **A service pack** updates the version you already use, for example from 34.0 with Service Pack 4 to Service Pack 5. You install it with the latest full setup, which updates the installation in place. See [Installing the Product](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/setup/#install-a-service-pack).
- **A new major version**, for example 33.0 to 34.0, is what the steps below cover.

### Before You Start

- **Your subscription.** New major versions are included while your subscription is active. See [Licensing Overview](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/overview/licensing/#subscription-and-updates).
- **The setup.** Download the setup of version 34.0 and install it, as described in [Installing the Product](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/setup/llms-full.txt).
- **The changes.** Read [Breaking Changes](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/upgrading/breaking-changes/llms-full.txt) for the changes your code may need.

### Upgrade a .NET Framework Project

A .NET Framework project references the assemblies of one TX Text Control version and names that version in its *licenses.licx* file.

The simplest way is to uninstall the earlier version before you install version 34.0. Visual Studio then adapts the project to the new version when you open it.

If you keep several versions installed, update the project yourself:

1. Open the project in Visual Studio.
2. Remove the references to the assemblies of the earlier version, and add references to the same assemblies of version 34.0 from the *Assembly* folder of the new installation.
3. Open *licenses.licx* and change the version number in each entry to the version of the new assemblies.
4. Close Visual Studio and open the project again.
5. Choose **Build** > **Rebuild Solution**.

> Warning
>
> **Old Versions in licenses.licx.** If an entry still names an earlier version, the license of that version can be picked up and cause a licensing error. Take the version number from the properties of the new references. [.NET Framework: licenses.licx](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/licensing/development/#net-framework-licenses-licx) shows an entry and explains the file.

### Upgrade a .NET Project

A .NET 8 or higher project references a version of the NuGet package `TXTextControl.TextControl.WinForms.SDK`. Each major version has its own package versions: 34.0.0 to 34.0.5 belong to version 34.0, and 33.0.x to version 33.0.

1. Install the setup of version 34.0, which adds the new package versions to **Text Control Offline Packages**.
2. Update the package in your project to the newest 34.0 version. See [Installing and Updating Packages](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-winforms/installation/nuget/install-update/llms-full.txt).
3. Rebuild the project.

- **From version 32.0**, check the target framework first: the 32.0 packages targeted .NET 5 and, from Service Pack 2, .NET 6, while the 33.0 and 34.0 packages require .NET 8 or higher. Change the project to .NET 8 or higher before you update the package.
- **The license** comes with the package, which contains the license file of its version. No *licenses.licx* entry needs to change.
- **The toolbox tab** is named after the major version, so after the update, the items are in the tab **TX Text Control 34.0**.
