# What's New in TX Text Control 15.0

Documents gained columns, PDF/A archiving and a PDF import in TX Text Control 15.0. The version also made paragraphs programmable as objects and introduced the field adapters of the `DocumentServer.Fields` namespace.

Version 15.0 was released in May 2009 for the server and the client products, as the press release [Press Release: TX Text Control 15.0 is Released](https://www.textcontrol.com/blog/2009/05/06/press-release-tx-text-control-150-is-released/) announced. Its PDF/A export produces PDF/A-1b documents. TX Text Control .NET for WPF didn't exist yet: its first version was [Version 16.0](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/whats-new/older-versions/1600/llms-full.txt), and the classes below belong to the class library that it shares with the Windows Forms edition. The ASP.NET DocumentViewer of the version belongs to the ASP.NET products and isn't listed here, nor are features of the Windows Forms control, such as the button for structured lists and the customizable clipboard.

### Columns

The text of a section can be arranged in columns, so that one page can have different numbers of columns where a section begins. [SectionFormat.Columns](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/columns-property/llms-full.txt) sets the number of columns. When [EqualColumnWidth](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/equalcolumnwidth-property/llms-full.txt) is `true`, which is the default, all columns get the same width, calculated from the page size. Otherwise, [ColumnWidths](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/columnwidths-property/llms-full.txt) and [ColumnDistances](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/columndistances-property/llms-full.txt) set each width and distance, and [ColumnLineColor](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/columnlinecolor-property/llms-full.txt) and [ColumnLineWidth](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/sectionformat/columnlinewidth-property/llms-full.txt) draw a line between the columns. A column break continues the text in the next column. ### PDF/A and PDF Import

- **PDF/A.** Documents can be saved as PDF/A-1 Level B, the ISO standard for archiving, with the [StreamType](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/streamtype/enumeration/llms-full.txt) and [BinaryStreamType](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/binarystreamtype/enumeration/llms-full.txt) value `AdobePDFA`. Besides the content of a standard PDF document, a PDF/A document contains only embeddable fonts, stores document data such as the title and the author as XMP, describes which characters of a font are used and contains a color profile. Links that start other applications and access restrictions aren't allowed, so [SaveSettings.DocumentAccessPermissions](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/savesettings/documentaccesspermissions-property/llms-full.txt) is ignored.
- **Fonts for PDF/A.** Set [FontSettings.EmbeddableFontsOnly](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/fontsettings/embeddablefontsonly-property/llms-full.txt) of [ServerTextControl.FontSettings](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/servertextcontrol/fontsettings-property/llms-full.txt) to `true` before you save, so that the document contains only embeddable fonts. The [AdaptFont](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/servertextcontrol/adaptfont-event/llms-full.txt) event, switched on with [FontSettings.AdaptFontEvent](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/fontsettings/adaptfontevent-property/llms-full.txt), controls which font replaces one that can't be used; its [AdaptFontEventArgs](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/adaptfonteventargs/llms-full.txt) give the font name, the adapted font name and the supported fonts. - **PDF import.** The `StreamType` value `AdobePDF` loads the text of a PDF document with all load methods. Because PDF describes where characters are and not how the document is structured, the import filter either makes each line a paragraph, builds paragraphs from the text flow or creates a text frame for each block of text at its original position. [LoadSettings.PDFImportSettings](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/loadsettings/pdfimportsettings-property/llms-full.txt) selects the mode with a [PDFImportSettings](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/pdfimportsettings/enumeration/llms-full.txt) value. ### Lists, Paragraphs and Pages

- **Structured lists.** The [ListType](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listtype/enumeration/llms-full.txt) value `Structured` shows the numbers of all higher levels in front of the number of a list item, together with the text before and after them. [ListFormat.TextBeforeNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/textbeforenumber-property/llms-full.txt) and [ListFormat.TextAfterNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/textafternumber-property/llms-full.txt) hold text longer than one character.
- **Paragraphs.** [ServerTextControl.Paragraphs](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/servertextcontrol/paragraphs-property/llms-full.txt) returns a [ParagraphCollection](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraphcollection/llms-full.txt); headers and footers and text frames have their own. Each [Paragraph](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/llms-full.txt) has its [Format](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/format-property/llms-full.txt), [ListFormat](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/listformat-property/llms-full.txt) and [FormattingStyle](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/formattingstyle-property/llms-full.txt), its first character and line, its length, its lines and its [Text](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/text-property/llms-full.txt). [ListNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/listnumber-property/llms-full.txt) and [ListNumberText](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/listnumbertext-property/llms-full.txt) give its number in a list, and [Save](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/paragraph/save-method/llms-full.txt) saves it in a format. - **Page images.** [Page.GetImage](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/page/getimage-method/llms-full.txt) returns the content of a page as an enhanced metafile or as a bitmap in screen resolution.

### Field Adapters and Mail Merge

- **Field adapters.** The new [DocumentServer.Fields](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/llms-full.txt) namespace provides adapters for the MS Word merge fields and form fields that `MailMerge` uses: [MergeField](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/mergefield/llms-full.txt), [FormText](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/formtext/llms-full.txt), [FormCheckBox](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/formcheckbox/llms-full.txt), [FormDropDown](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/formdropdown/llms-full.txt), [IfField](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/iffield/llms-full.txt), [DateField](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/datefield/llms-full.txt) and [IncludeText](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver-fields/includetext/llms-full.txt). - **Document controller.** [DocumentServer.DocumentController](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/documentcontroller/llms-full.txt) loads, saves and processes a document. [GetFieldAdapters](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/documentcontroller/getfieldadapters-method/llms-full.txt) returns the adapters of its fields, and [MergeField](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/documentcontroller/mergefield-method/llms-full.txt) sets the value of a form field.
- **New field types in mail merge.** [MailMerge](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/mailmerge/llms-full.txt) processes the MS Word fields IF, DATE and INCLUDETEXT. - **Events.** [FieldMerged](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/mailmerge/fieldmerged-event/llms-full.txt) occurs for each merged field, and [IncludeTextMerging](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/mailmerge/includetextmerging-event/llms-full.txt) for each document that an INCLUDETEXT field includes.
- **Search path.** [SearchPath](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol-documentserver/mailmerge/searchpath-property/llms-full.txt) names the directory where subtemplates and images are searched.

### Upgrade to Version 15.0

- **List text.** [ListFormat.TextBeforeNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/textbeforenumber-property/llms-full.txt) and [ListFormat.TextAfterNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/textafternumber-property/llms-full.txt) replace [ListFormat.CharBeforeNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/charbeforenumber-property/llms-full.txt) and [ListFormat.CharAfterNumber](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/listformat/charafternumber-property/llms-full.txt), which remain for compatibility and shouldn't be used in new code. - **Obsolete text field property.** The member list of version 15.0 marks [TextField.ShowActivated](https://docs.textcontrol.com/tx-text-control-dotnet-wpf/reference/txtextcontrol/textfield/showactivated-property/llms-full.txt) as obsolete.

The classes and members below are the ones that the What's New documentation of version 15.0 lists for TX Text Control .NET for WPF. Names are relative to the `TXTextControl` namespace, each name links to its current reference page, and "(obsolete)" marks a member that is obsolete today.
