TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms

What's New in TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms 11.0

Topic

Tables inside tables arrived with TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms 11.0, together with a method that splits a table in two and an undo buffer that undoes and redoes many steps. The version also made all built-in resources localizable, reduced the size of documents through image export settings, protected PDF documents with passwords and let a TextControl grow, shrink and show a transparent background.

Version 11.0 was released in April 2004 as TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms 11.0, as the press release Press Release: TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms 11.0 is Released announced. ServerTextControl didn't exist yet: it came with Version 12.0.

Tables

  • Nested tables. A table can contain other tables, without a limit on the nesting level, and all text filters load and save them. TextControl.Tables contains the top-level and the nested tables in the order of the text flow. Table.NestedTables returns the tables inside a table, Table.NestedLevel its level, and Table.OuterTable and Table.OuterMostTable the tables around it.
  • Split a table. Table.Split splits a table above or below the row with the input position; Table.CanSplit tells whether that is possible. Both parts keep the identifier of the original table, and a TableCreated event occurs for the bottom part, so that it can get an identifier of its own. Splitting above the first row or below the last row inserts an empty line, which is how text is typed above or below a nested table that starts or ends at the edge of its cell.
  • Table collections. TableBaseCollection is the base class of the table collections.

Tables and Table Formulas shows how to work with tables today.

Undo and Localization

  • Multiple undo. A new undo buffer undoes and redoes many steps, and it covers images, text fields and all table operations. TextControl.UndoActionName and TextControl.RedoActionName name the next action to undo or redo, so that the user interface can show it. TextControl.AllowUndo switches the buffer off, which saves time and memory, for example when a TextControl generates reports. See Undo and Redo.
  • Resource kit. All built-in resources can be localized. TX Text Control reads localized resources from satellite assemblies: you translate the strings of a .resx file, build the satellite assembly with a batch file and install it in a subdirectory of the application's directory. See Localization and Resource Kit.

Control Appearance

  • Ruler bar design. The RulerBar has a flat design by default. RulerBar.BorderStyle sets the previous look. The StatusBar got a BorderStyle as well.
  • Growing and shrinking. A TextControl that shows small pieces of text, such as the content of a database field, can adapt its size to the text. TextControl.AutoControlSize takes an AutoSize object that sets whether the control expands and shrinks, up to a maximum and down to a minimum size. The events HExpanded, VExpanded, HShrunk and VShrunk occur after the control has changed its size.
  • Transparency. TextControl.BackColor accepts Color.Transparent for a transparent background.
  • View mode. Growing, shrinking and transparency require the SimpleControl setting of TextControl.ViewMode.

Upgrade to Version 11.0

  • Transparent background. TextControl.BackColor can be set to Color.Transparent, but only when ViewMode is SimpleControl.
  • Style constructors. InlineStyle and ParagraphStyle have an additional constructor that creates a new style from an existing one and copies all its attributes.

New Classes, Properties, Methods and Events

The classes and members below are the ones that the What's New documentation of version 11.0 lists for TX Text Control .NET for Windows Forms. Names are relative to the TXTextControl namespace, each name links to its current reference page, and "(obsolete)" marks a member that is obsolete today. The documentation of version 11.0 names the auto-sizing property AutoControlSize; according to the update notes of Version 13.0, the property was called AutoSize until that version renamed it.
